How to Get a Concealed Pistol License (CPL) in Michigan

Michigan requires a Concealed Pistol License (CPL) to carry a concealed gun. You apply through the county clerk where you live, and the Michigan State Police handles background checks and online renewals. Permitless carry is not law: House Bill 5653, introduced in March 2026, remains in the House Judiciary Committee.

Who Can Apply

  • Age 21 or older
  • US citizen or lawfully admitted noncitizen who is a legal Michigan resident
  • Michigan resident for at least 6 months, with limited waivers
  • Completed a pistol safety training course that meets state requirements
  • Not subject to any statutory disqualification checked during the background review

Training Requirements

The course must total at least 8 hours, be completed within 5 years before you apply, and be certified by the state or a national or state firearms training organization. It includes at least 5 hours of classroom instruction and at least 3 hours on a firing range with at least 30 rounds fired. The firearms law portion must be taught by an attorney or someone trained in the use of deadly force. Your certificate must state that the course complies with section 5j of 1927 PA 372 and carry the instructor's signature.

How to Apply

  1. Complete an approved 8-hour CPL class and keep your signed certificate.
  2. Get the RI-012 application from your county clerk or the Michigan State Police firearms website.
  3. File the signed application with the county clerk where you live, with your training certificate and a passport-quality photo if the Secretary of State has no digital photo of you.
  4. Pay the $100 application and licensing fee.
  5. Have classifiable fingerprints taken within 45 days of filing, or the application is considered withdrawn.
  6. Receive your license or a notice of statutory disqualification within 45 days after fingerprinting.

Cost

The initial application fee is $100, nonrefundable. Fingerprinting at a participating entity adds $15. Renewal costs $115. Class tuition is set by each instructor and is separate from state fees.

Carry Rules to Know

  • Carry your CPL and a state-issued driver license or ID whenever you carry.
  • If stopped by police, immediately tell the officer you are carrying a gun. A first violation carries a $500 fine and a 6-month suspension.
  • Concealed carry is barred, even with a CPL, at schools, child care centers, sports arenas and stadiums, bars whose main income is on-site drinks, places of worship unless permitted, entertainment venues seating 2,500 or more, hospitals, and college dorms and classrooms. Parking areas are excluded.
  • Your license expires on your birthday 4 to 5 years after it is issued. You can renew up to 6 months early or up to 1 year after expiration.

Michigan CCW FAQs

How Much Does a CPL Cost in Michigan?

The initial Concealed Pistol License application fee is $100, paid to the county clerk and nonrefundable. Fingerprinting at a participating entity costs an extra $15. Renewal costs $115. Training class tuition is separate and set by the instructor.

How Long Is a CPL Class in Michigan?

A qualifying class is at least 8 hours: at least 5 hours of classroom instruction plus at least 3 hours on a firing range, where you must fire at least 30 rounds. The training must be completed within 5 years before you apply.

Is Michigan a Permitless Carry State?

No. Michigan still requires a Concealed Pistol License to carry a concealed gun. A permitless carry bill, House Bill 5653, was introduced in March 2026 and referred to the House Judiciary Committee, but it has no further recorded action and has not become law.

How Long Does It Take to Get a CPL in Michigan?

By law, the county clerk must issue your license or a notice of statutory disqualification within 45 days after your fingerprints are taken. If neither arrives in that time, your fingerprint receipt, carried with your state-issued driver license or ID, serves as your license until a decision is issued.

How Old Do You Have to Be to Get a CPL in Michigan?

You must be at least 21 years old to get a Michigan Concealed Pistol License. You must also be a legal Michigan resident who has lived in the state for at least 6 months, with limited waivers for emergencies and for new residents who already hold another state's license.

How Do You Renew a CPL in Michigan?

You can renew online or by first-class mail through the Michigan State Police system, up to 6 months before expiration or up to 1 year after it expires. Renewal costs $115 and requires certifying at least 3 hours of review training plus at least 1 hour of range time within the 6 months before you apply. A renewal filed before expiration keeps your current license valid until a decision is made.

Do You Need a Holster to Carry in Michigan?

Michigan's concealed carry statutes do not require a holster for CPL holders. A holster is still the safest way to carry: choose one that covers the trigger guard completely and holds the gun securely, like a KYDEX holster molded to your exact gun.
