A new Ohio Concealed Handgun License costs $67 if you have lived in Ohio for 5 or more years, and a renewal costs $50. If you have lived in Ohio for less than 5 years, or you are a nonresident who works in Ohio, you pay the same fee plus the actual cost of an FBI background check. Training course fees are separate and set by each instructor.
The class must include at least 8 hours of training in the safe handling and use of a firearm, including at least 2 hours of in-person range time and live-fire training. If the course and instructor qualify, the classroom portion can be online, but handling demonstrations and the physical competency test must be in person.
Yes. Since June 13, 2022, adults 21 and older who are not legally barred from having a firearm can carry a concealed handgun in Ohio without a license. Permitless carriers follow the same rules as license holders, except they cannot carry a gun in their vehicle in a school safety zone.
By law, the county sheriff must issue the license within 45 days of receiving your completed application, supporting documents, and fee, unless you are disqualified. Once issued, the license is valid for 5 years.
You must be at least 21 years old to get an Ohio Concealed Handgun License, and 21 is also the minimum age to carry concealed without a license under Ohio's permitless carry law.
No. Since June 13, 2022, you do not have to volunteer that you are carrying. If an officer asks whether you are carrying a concealed handgun, you must answer truthfully, and failing to disclose is a second-degree misdemeanor. During a stop you must keep your hands in plain sight, avoid touching your gun unless directed, and follow the officer's lawful orders.
Ohio law does not require a holster for concealed carry. The Ohio Attorney General advises that a handgun should always be carried safely and securely, and during a police stop you may not touch your gun unless an officer tells you to, so it needs to stay put on its own. A good holster keeps the gun secure, protects the trigger, and lets you keep your hands off it. If you carry, choose one that covers the trigger guard completely and holds the gun securely, like a KYDEX holster molded to your exact gun.
