How to Get a Concealed Weapon License (CWL) in Florida

Since July 1, 2023, Florida has allowed people who meet the state's license eligibility requirements to carry a concealed gun without a license. The Concealed Weapon or Firearm License (CWL) is still issued by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS), Division of Licensing, and many gun owners still get one for the benefits below.

Who Can Apply

You must be at least 21, unless you are a servicemember or a veteran discharged under honorable conditions. You must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, and you cannot be disqualified under Florida or federal law. Florida residents and nonresidents can both apply.

Training Requirements

Florida requires proof of firearm competency. Most applicants take a firearms course from an NRA-certified or state-certified instructor, which must include live fire with a gun in the instructor's presence. Other accepted proof includes a hunter safety course, a law enforcement or security firearms course, organized shooting competition, or military service (such as a DD Form 214 showing an honorable discharge).

How to Apply

  1. Complete an approved firearms course and get your certificate
  2. Apply at an FDACS Division of Licensing regional office, at a participating county tax collector's office, or by mail
  3. Have your fingerprints and photo taken (tax collector offices scan them on site)
  4. Pay the license and fingerprint fees
  5. FDACS must issue or deny the license within 90 days of receiving a complete application

Cost

A new license costs $55 plus a $42 fingerprint fee, for $97 paid to FDACS. County tax collector offices add a service fee, so the total there is often around $119. A renewal for a Florida resident is $45 plus the service fee. The license is valid for 7 years.

Why Get a CWL If Florida Has Permitless Carry

  • Carry in other states that recognize the Florida license
  • Skip Florida's 3-day waiting period when you buy a gun
  • Proof of eligibility and training if you carry in Florida
  • A valid license if you move or travel and permitless carry rules differ

Carry Rules to Know

In September 2025, Florida's First District Court of Appeal struck down the state's open carry ban in McDaniels v. State, and the Attorney General did not appeal. Whether you carry concealed or openly, guns are still banned in places such as police stations, courthouses, polling places, schools, colleges, bars, and airport terminals past security, and private businesses can ask you to leave if you are armed.

Florida CCW FAQs

Do You Need a License to Carry a Concealed Gun in Florida?

No. Since July 1, 2023, Florida allows people who meet the state's license eligibility requirements, including being 21 or older, to carry a concealed gun without a license. The Concealed Weapon or Firearm License is optional, but it lets you carry in states that recognize it and skip the 3-day waiting period when you buy a gun.

How Much Does a Florida Concealed Carry License Cost?

A new Florida Concealed Weapon or Firearm License costs $55 plus a $42 fingerprint fee, for $97 paid to FDACS. County tax collector offices add a service fee, so the total there is often around $119. A Florida resident renewal costs $45 plus the service fee. Class fees are set by each instructor.

What Training Do You Need for a Florida Concealed Carry License?

You need proof of firearm competency. Most people take a course from an NRA-certified or state-certified instructor that includes live fire with a gun in the instructor's presence. A hunter safety course, a law enforcement or security firearms course, organized shooting competition, or military service also counts.

How Old Do You Have to Be to Get a Concealed Carry License in Florida?

You must be at least 21. Servicemembers and veterans discharged under honorable conditions can apply younger than 21.

How Long Does It Take to Get a Florida Concealed Carry License?

Florida law gives FDACS 90 days after it receives a complete application to issue or deny the license. Applying in person at a tax collector's office, where fingerprints are scanned on site, avoids delays from mailed fingerprint cards.

How Long Is a Florida Concealed Carry License Good For?

A Florida Concealed Weapon or Firearm License is valid for 7 years from the date it is issued. You can renew it up to 95 days before it expires.

Is Open Carry Legal in Florida?

In September 2025, Florida's First District Court of Appeal struck down the state's open carry ban in McDaniels v. State, and the Attorney General did not appeal. Location limits still apply to all carry, including schools, courthouses, polling places, bars, and airport terminals past security. Whether you carry openly or concealed, use a holster that covers the trigger guard completely and holds the gun securely, like a KYDEX holster molded to your exact gun.
