Figures are Springfield Armory's own published numbers for the XD9801 and XD9102, with the 9mm Service Model weight taken from third party measurement rather than a Springfield spec sheet, so treat it as approximate. Capacity varies by SKU and by state, so check your model number rather than a general figure.
What matters for the holster: 26 to 30 ounces is a real load on a waistband, so the belt is not optional on this gun. The 1.2 inch grip width is wider than a modern micro-compact, which means the grip is what prints, not the muzzle, and a claw earns its money here more than on a slim single stack. And because the XD carries its bulk high in the frame, ride height and cant do more for concealment on this gun than they do on a flatter one.

Two rows are worth reading twice. The Mod.2 3.3in .45 ACP is not the same shape as the 3in Sub-Compact and takes its own shell, which is the single most common ordering mistake we see on this family. And the XD Mod.4 OSP, which Springfield introduced in 2026 with reworked slide serrations and a revised frame, is a new geometry that we have not validated against the existing XD molds. We would rather tell you that than sell you a shell we have not confirmed.

What Actually Matters When Buying
Material. Kydex holds its shape, does not absorb sweat, and reholsters one-handed because the mouth stays open. On a 28 ounce gun that matters twice over: a collapsing holster mouth is annoying on a light gun and genuinely awkward on a heavy one.
Retention. Ours is a screw, not a strap. The Posi-Click system lets you set retention where you want it and gives you an audible click when the gun seats. Set it tight enough that the gun stays put when you turn the holster upside down and shake it, and no tighter.
Adjustability. Cant is the single cheapest concealment upgrade you own, and you already paid for it. Forward cant of 10 to 15 degrees tucks the grip in at 3 or 4 o'clock. Near zero cant is what you want at appendix.
Trigger guard coverage. Every shell here fully covers the trigger guard, with the guard itself undercut so you get a full firing grip on the draw. Nothing touches the trigger until your finger does.
The belt. This is where most XD carry setups fail. A 28 to 30 ounce gun plus a holster on a fashion belt will roll away from your body no matter how good the Kydex is. The Ultimate Concealed Carry Leather Gun Belt is 14 ounce leather at 1.5 inches wide, and it is the upgrade that fixes more complaints than any holster change.
Two small parts worth adding. The Holster Claw Kit at $15.95 levers the grip toward your body and is the difference between printing and not printing at appendix. The Tuckable Low Profile Holster Belt Loop Kit at $12.95 mounts a tuckable belt loop over the retention holes of any Rounded Gear IWB or Tuckable holster with two retention screws forward of the trigger guard, so a standard XD IWB can be made tuckable without buying a second shell. The two kits are designed to work together.

Appendix Carry Setup
Appendix works on a full size XD, but it is less forgiving than it is on a micro-compact, so set it up properly rather than hoping.
Add the claw. On a gun with a 1.2 inch grip width, the claw is doing the heaviest lifting of any part you can buy. It rides against the inside of your belt and rotates the grip into your body.
Run near zero cant. Forward cant helps at 4 o'clock and hurts at appendix, where it pushes the muzzle across your leg and the grip away from your chest.
Set ride height for sitting, not standing. Everyone tests a new holster standing in front of a mirror. Sit down in a chair, get in a car, and adjust from there. On the tuckable, deep conceal ride height plus a slight negative cant is the setup most XD appendix carriers land on.
Wear the belt. Repeated deliberately: the belt matters more at appendix than anywhere else, because the gun is levering directly against your waistband instead of riding on your hip bone.
Optics, Lights and the Grip Safety
Every Kydex holster we build is optic cut, so an optic-equipped XD needs no different shell and no separate decision at checkout. Our shells are also over-cut at the open face to accommodate threaded barrels and cut to clear suppressor height sights. If you have added an optic plate or taller irons to an XD, the holster you would have bought anyway is the one you want.
Weapon lights are the genuine variant. A light changes the geometry under the muzzle, so a light-bearing gun needs a shell molded for that specific gun and light combination. We do not currently list a light-bearing shell for the XD 3in or 4in. If you run a light on your XD, contact us before ordering rather than assuming a standard shell will clear it.
The XD's grip safety is worth a word, because it is one of the features that separates this gun from a Glock. It sits at the back of the grip and needs a firm, full firing grip to disengage. That is an argument for a holster with an undercut trigger guard and a clean, unobstructed grip on the draw, which is how these are cut: if you are indexing high and firm to beat the grip safety, the holster should not be fighting you for the same real estate.
What Else Fits a Springfield XD Holster
Our XD fitment comes from the mold, not from a family name, and it is stated on each product page. Here is what actually shares a shell.
- The XD 4in Service Model shell covers 9mm, .40 SW and .45 ACP. One holster, three calibers. The Service Model's external dimensions do not change with chambering, so the same mold indexes all three.
- The XD 3in Sub-Compact shell covers 9mm and .40 SW. Same principle at the shorter barrel length.
- The XD Mod.2 3.3in .45 ACP does not share the 3in shell. It has its own mold. Order by the Mod.2 name, not by the barrel length alone.
- XD-M and XD-S do not share XD shells. They are separate guns with their own molds, sized by barrel length. An XD-M 4.5in will not go into an XD 4in holster.
- The XD Mod.4 OSP is not covered. Springfield's 2026 fourth generation gun revises the slide and frame, and we have not validated it against the XD molds, so we do not claim it.
If you own two XDs at different barrel lengths, you need two shells. There is no universal XD holster in our line that we would honestly sell you as one.

What Is the Absolute Best Concealed Carry Holster?

What Does "Mexican Carry" Mean?
Mexican carry means carrying a gun tucked into your waistband with no holster at all. It leaves the trigger uncovered and gives the gun nothing to hold it in place, so it risks both a negligent discharge and simply dropping the gun. A $42 Kydex shell removes both risks. Do not carry this way.
What Is the Most Comfortable Concealed Carry Holster?
The most comfortable holster is usually the one you have adjusted, not the one you paid most for. Cant, ride height and a stiff 1.5 inch belt account for most of the difference people attribute to the holster itself. On a heavier gun like the XD, an OWB paddle is the most comfortable option outright, at the cost of needing a cover garment.
