Best 1911 Holster: IWB and OWB Buyer's Guide

April 20, 2026 7 min read

The best 1911 holster for most carriers is a Kydex IWB holster molded to your barrel length. Ours is the Rounded Gear 1911 IWB Holster, from $44.95 in 5 inch Government, 4.25 inch Commander and 3.5 inch Officer sizes. It is Claw Compatible and optic cut. For a railed 1911, use the matching w/Rail shell.

The Quick List

1911 Sizes and What They Mean for a Holster

A Kydex holster wraps the slide, barrel and trigger guard, so barrel length is the number that matters most. The grip sits outside the holster. Overall lengths below are Colt's figures for the Government and Combat Commander; other makers are close but not identical.

Size Barrel Length Overall Length Our Kydex Shells
Government 5 in 8.5 in IWB and Paddle, with or without a rail
Commander 4.25 in 7.75 in IWB and Paddle, with or without a rail
Officer 3.5 in Varies by maker IWB and Paddle, no rail

A steel Colt Combat Commander is 1.25 inches wide and 33 ounces unloaded. That width is why the 1911 conceals well for its size, and that weight is why it needs a real gun belt.

Which 1911 Holster Do You Need?

Three things decide the shell: barrel length, whether the frame has a rail, and frame width. Caliber does not. A 9mm and a .45 ACP 1911 of the same size take the same holster.

  • Barrel length. Our fitment data rates each shell for one size: 1911 5in Government, 1911 4.25in Commander or 1911 3.5in Officer. A Government shell is too long for a Commander and a Commander shell is too short for a Government.
  • Rail or no rail. An accessory rail changes the dust cover, so railed guns get their own shells: 1911 5in Government (w/Rail) and 1911 4.25in Commander (w/Rail). We do not make a railed Officer shell.
  • Frame width. Double-stack 1911s are wider. The Springfield 1911 DS Prodigy gets its own shells, rated for the Springfield 1911 DS Prodigy 5in AOS and 4.25in AOS.

What Actually Matters When Buying

  • A shell matched to your barrel length and frame. The single biggest 1911 holster mistake is buying the wrong size. Check barrel length and rail before you order.
  • Full trigger guard coverage. A 1911 is carried cocked and locked, so the holster must cover the trigger completely. Every holster in this guide does.
  • Adjustable retention. A steel 1911 is heavy. You should be able to set how hard it clicks in and how much pull it takes to draw.
  • Cant. A forward cant helps hide the long Government slide at strong side carry. Our shells adjust from -5 to +20 degrees.
  • A real gun belt. A dress belt sags under a 1911. The Ultimate Concealed Carry Leather Gun Belt ($69.99) is 1.5 inches and 14 oz leather.

IWB vs OWB for the 1911

Factor IWB OWB Paddle
Concealment Good. The slim frame hides well; the long grip is what prints. Fair. Needs a jacket or untucked shirt.
Comfort Good with a stiff belt; a Commander or Officer is easier than a Government. Excellent. Nothing inside the waistband.
Draw Speed Good, once you practice clearing the garment. Faster.
Wardrobe Impact Some. Many carriers size up pants for a Government. None.
Best For Daily concealed carry. Range, training, open carry, winter carry.

Appendix Carry Setup

  • Pick the shorter slide. A Commander or Officer sits far better at 1 o'clock than a 5 inch Government, especially seated.
  • Fix the grip print. The 1911 grip is long. Add the Holster Claw Kit to a Claw Compatible IWB to push it into your body.
  • Use a stiff belt. Appendix carry puts all the weight forward, and a steel 1911 is heavy.
  • Check it seated. Sit in your car and at a desk before you settle on cant and position. Most problems only show up sitting down.

Optics and Lights

Every Kydex holster we build for the 1911 is optic cut, so an optic-equipped 1911 needs no different shell and no separate decision at checkout.

A weapon light is a different story. A mounted light changes the outline of the gun and needs a light-bearing shell, and we do not currently make one for the 1911. Our w/Rail shells are for railed 1911s carried without a light.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Are Good Gun Holsters?

A good gun holster covers the trigger guard completely, holds the gun by its shape so it cannot shift, lets you adjust retention, and stays put on a stiff belt. Kydex molded to your exact gun does all four. For a 1911, that means a shell matched to your barrel length and to whether the frame has a rail.

What Does "Mexican Carry" Mean?

Mexican carry means tucking a gun into your waistband with no holster. It is unsafe: the trigger is exposed, the gun can shift or fall, and nothing holds it in place on the draw. With a cocked 1911 it is worse, because clothing can push the thumb safety off. A Kydex 1911 IWB holster starts at $44.95.

Who Makes the Best Quality 1911 Pistol?

Wilson Combat, Nighthawk Custom, Ed Brown and Les Baer are widely regarded as the best built 1911s, hand fitted and priced to match. Dan Wesson, Colt and Springfield Armory offer strong quality for less. Whichever you choose, the holster depends on barrel length, rail and frame width, not the brand.

Do All 1911s Fit the Same Holster?

No. Three things decide the holster: barrel length (5 inch Government, 4.25 inch Commander or 3.5 inch Officer), whether the frame has an accessory rail, and frame width, since double-stack guns like the Springfield Prodigy are wider. Caliber does not matter. We build separate Kydex shells for each size and for railed frames.

What Is the Best Holster for a 1911?

For most carriers it is an IWB Kydex holster molded to your barrel length, with adjustable retention, adjustable cant and full trigger guard coverage. Our pick is the Rounded Gear 1911 IWB Holster, from $44.95 in 5, 4.25 and 3.5 inch sizes. It is Claw Compatible, which helps hide the long 1911 grip.

Is It Practical to Conceal Carry a 1911?

Yes, with the right setup. A 1911 is slim, about 1.25 inches wide, but heavy, around 33 ounces unloaded for a steel Commander, so a stiff gun belt matters. A Commander or Officer hides more easily than a full Government. Carry it cocked and locked in a holster that fully covers the trigger.
